Kuala Lumpur (ANTARA) - Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim hosted President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste José Ramos-Horta for a luncheon, while discussing the expansion of bilateral cooperation during Horta’s visit to Malaysia. “Alhamdulillah, today I hosted the President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, José Ramos-Horta, for a luncheon in conjunction with his special visit to Malaysia, which further strengthens mutually beneficial cooperation for the welfare of the people of both countries,” Anwar Ibrahim said in a statement in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday. Anwar stated that as a neighbouring country and part of the ASEAN family, Malaysia welcomes efforts to strengthen regional relations based on the spirit of togetherness, mutual respect, and shared responsibility in maintaining peace, stability, and prosperity in the region. “During the luncheon, we also exchanged views on efforts to expand cooperation in the fields of economy and trade, strategic investment, human resource development, education and technical training, as well as exploring new opportunities that can drive sustainable growth and open wider avenues of progress for the younger generations of both countries,” he explained. Anwar expressed hope that the close ties that have been established will continue to be strengthened for the mutual benefit of the people of Malaysia and Timor-Leste, as well as the progress of ASEAN as a whole. José Ramos-Horta is undertaking a visit to Malaysia from 13 to 17 June 2026 to strengthen and expand cooperation between Timor-Leste and Malaysia.
