Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is expected to be discharged from hospital on Wednesday (12/8/2026). The statement was provided by his wife, Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, as reported by Reuters from the national news agency Bernama.

Anwar, 79, had been under medical observation since undergoing elective laparoscopic surgery to treat a para-umbilical hernia. He has been hospitalised since Monday.

‘He expressed his gratitude to supporters who have prayed for his health and recovery,’ Wan Azizah said.

Anwar has served as Prime Minister since November 2022. This is the first time he has been hospitalised during his four years in office.

The announcement comes amid a heated political climate in the neighbouring country. The Democratic Action Party (DAP), the largest party in Anwar’s governing coalition, will hold a vote on 16 August to determine whether its leaders will retain their cabinet positions. The decision was announced by DAP Secretary-General Anthony Loke on Tuesday, following a decline in public support for the party and the government coalition after a series of defeats in local elections.

Since Anwar Ibrahim became Prime Minister in November 2022, Malaysia’s economic performance has been fairly strong, particularly in 2024-2025, despite ongoing fiscal challenges and external pressures. Malaysia’s GDP grew by 5.80% in Q2 2026 compared to the same period the previous year.
