Antiterror efforts must go on

From Koran Tempo

No country in the world is now free from the challenge and
threat of global terrorism, but ironically Indonesia, as a
frequent target of terrorist acts, has deprived itself of a legal
mechanism to seize and punish the culprits.

With the annulment of Law No. 16/2003 by the Constitutional
Court, Indonesia, as a major country, will have to face the
consequences and remain capable of fighting terrorism through an
open attitude toward the globalization of transnational laws.

Indonesia should not be trapped in legal conservatism, which
will eventually endanger the country itself. Instead, it should
follow the global trend in the war on terrorism or risk
international isolation.

The war on terrorism can be fought through a national
commitment to formulating rules at the security and intelligence
levels. A legal umbrella can be provided for intelligence
institutions to allow them greater freedom and more effective
operations against terrorism.
