Antique batik on display

JAKARTA (JP): Danar Hadi batik house is holding a one-week exhibition of antique batik to mark the opening of its new furniture gallery called Jawi Antik on the ground floor of its store on Jl. Melawai Raya, South Jakarta.

The exhibition, which is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. until Saturday, features part of the 5,000 items collected by Santosa Doellah, the owner of Danar Hadi. The collection, which has never previously been made public before, is not for sale. Only reproductions are available, according to Sjamsidar Isa, public relations manager of the batik house.

In the exhibition, visitors can observe handmade batik dating back to the 18th century. They include the batik of the Yogyakarta and Surakarta royal palaces as well as Dutch and Japanese batik. There is also batik with Chinese elements.
