Anticipating Forest Fires: Walhi West Java Conduct Joint Patrols with BBKSDA Forest Rangers

The ongoing dry season has triggered several forest and land fires (Karhutla) across various regions, including 30 hectares in Gunung Ciremai National Park, Kuningan, and 2 hectares in Masigit Kareumbi New Park, Sumedang. Land fires have also been reported in the Garut, Tasikmalaya, and Ciamis areas.

Dedi Kurniawan, Chairman of the West Java Regional Board of the Indonesian Forum for Environment (Walhi) and the National Communication Forum of Indonesian Conservation Cadres (FK3I), stated that the fires in Kuningan and Sumedang have affected protected forest areas. The remaining fires in Garut, Tasikmalaya, and Ciamis occurred in grassland areas. He noted that much of the burnt land consists of private property, village land, and vacant lots, with suspected causes including discarded cigarette butts and intentional waste burning.

According to Dedi, anticipating forest and land fires requires patrols involving local residents, supported by forest rangers from the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BBKSDA). However, he noted that unpredictable fire patterns and a lack of awareness among tourism operators, community groups, and village forest community institutions (LMDH) remain significant obstacles. He also criticised the lack of government appreciation and resources, noting that fire prevention efforts require operational funding, capable vehicles, and adequate infrastructure to address the damage occurring in West Java’s forests.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Garut Regency Fire Department, Usep Basuki Eko, reported that between January and July 2026, 209 fire incidents were recorded and handled, dominated by non-land fires. However, 64 land fire incidents in his jurisdiction are a serious concern due to the potential for an increase driven by El Niño effects. He urged the public to remain vigilant, avoid indiscriminate land burning, and ensure electrical installations are safe to prevent domestic fires.
