Anti-vice drive pays off

BANDAR LAMPUNG, Lampung: Bandar Lampung Mayor Suharto promised
to continue his anti-vice campaign after the local district court
passed sentence on 16 male and female prostitutes and their
patrons, early this week.

The court fined the men and women Rp 50,000 ($21) each for
their offenses, according to Antara. Most opted to pay the fine
rather than spend three months in jail.

They were all netted during an anti-vice operation at various
hotels and unauthorized red-light districts. One prostitute was
caught in a hotel room with three men, the news agency said.

Mayor Suharto last February ordered the closure of two red-
light districts in Pemandangan housing complex and the Pantai
Harapan area. (emb)
