Anti-govt websites back online

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters): Some Malaysian antigovernment Internet
sites reappeared on Tuesday after a three-day absence their
United States host said was due to a computer error.

About a dozen sites were removed and replaced with notices
saying they were deleted because they violated terms of agreement
set by site host Tripod, owned by Lycos Inc., but on Tuesday at
least three were back online.

The sudden disappearance of the sites on Saturday sparked
fears among the opposition that the government was somehow
involved, although Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has
consistently promised not to censor the Internet.

Malaysia's opposition, which champions the cause of Mahathir's
jailed rival Anwar Ibrahim, has relied on the Internet to spread
its message, publicizing political talks and demonstrations.
