Hundreds of people demonstrated on Wednesday in four
Indonesian cities against possible U.S. attacks on Afghanistan.
Protesters burned U.S. flags and chanted anti-American slogans
in the capital Jakarta, and the cities of Palangkaraya, Jambi and
Medan, officials said.
In the past two weeks, there been daily protests in Indonesia
by Muslims opposed to threatened U.S. military action in
retaliation for terrorist attacks on New York and Washington on
Sept. 11.
The State Department has warned Americans not to travel to
Indonesia. It also authorized the evacuation of all nonessential
personnel at the embassy in Jakarta.
