The artificial intelligence company Anthropic has quietly submitted preliminary documents for an initial public offering (IPO) to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). This move opens the possibility for Anthropic to become one of the first major AI companies to list on the stock exchange.

“This gives us the option to go public once the SEC completes its review,” Anthropic stated in a release on Monday (1/6/2026), as reported by CNBC. The company added that the proposed IPO would depend on market conditions and other factors. The firm is still required to submit an official prospectus to investors at least 15 days before commencing its roadshow.

With this step, Anthropic is moving faster than OpenAI, which is also rumoured to be preparing a confidential IPO filing. Meanwhile, Elon Musk’s SpaceX has already submitted an official prospectus and is preparing for a roadshow this week, with the space company expected to debut on the exchange next week.

Anthropic was founded in 202lar by several executives and researchers who departed OpenAI due to differing views on the direction of AI development. The company is well-known for its Claude family of AI models, which power various products, including the popular programming assistant Claude Code.

In May, the company announced annual revenue of $47 billion. At an exchange rate of Rp 17,882 per US dollar, this is equivalent to approximately Rp 840.45 trillion, a significant jump from last year’s annual revenue of $10 billion (approximately Rp 178.82 trillion). Last week, Anthropic also closed a new funding round with a valuation of $965 billion, equivalent to roughly Rp 17,256 trillion. This valuation surpasses OpenAI’s valuation of $852 billion (approximately Rp 15,235 trillion) recorded at the end of March. This surge in valuation reflects the intense investor interest in generative AI companies, particularly those deemed capable of competing directly with OpenAI, Google, and xAI.
