Semarang (ANTARA) - Perum LKBN ANTARA strengthened journalism competencies and ethics through a journalism training programme for student press organisations (LPM) at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) in Surakarta, Central Java, on Tuesday.

Head of Perum LKBN ANTARA’s Central Java Bureau, Teguh Imam Wibowo, said the activity was aimed at driving improvements in the quality of student media content without neglecting ethics and applicable legal rules.

He said the training was part of Perum LKBN ANTARA’s Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) programme in an effort to build the capacity of student press practitioners.

“This time the activity is being held at Universitas Sebelas Maret, involving six LPM at UNS. Overall, this is part of the ANTARA News Agency’s annual target for developing student press organisations,” he said.

Before UNS, similar activities had been carried out at Universitas Tanjungpura in Pontianak, Universitas Jenderal Soedirman (Unsoed) in Purwokerto, and Universitas Halu Oleo (UHO) in Kendari.

The content produced is expected to cover various strategic issues, including developments within the campus environment as well as current social, economic and political issues.

Nevertheless, he reminded participants to firmly uphold journalistic principles and applicable legal norms throughout the production and distribution of content.

“The hope is that the LPM can further improve the quality of their content creation and convey a range of issues. However, we also emphasise that they must not forget ethics, the code of ethics, and the legal rules related to publishing content in mass media as well as social media,” he said.

The Dean of UNS’s Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), Didik Gunawan Suharto, welcomed the initiative and collaboration brought by LKBN ANTARA.

According to him, the world of journalism and communication is not unfamiliar to the FISIP UNS environment.

“We hope this activity provides tangible benefits for the LPM participants. At FISIP UNS itself, the Communication study programme is complete, from undergraduate through to an accredited-with-excellence master’s degree, and up to doctoral level. In fact, the LPM mentors here are led directly by the Head of the Doctoral Programme in Communication Studies,” he said.

He added that every student organisation (ormawa) and student activity unit (UKM) within FISIP UNS is accompanied by supervising lecturers so that each programme run can proceed in a more directed, focused and sustainably developing manner.

Didik said the university was open to establishing further strategic cooperation and collaboration with LKBN ANTARA in the future.

Also present on the occasion was Fransisca Vena Apriliana, TJSL and Communication Manager at LKBN ANTARA, who introduced LKBN ANTARA to the students.

Echoing Didik’s remarks, she also stated that LKBN ANTARA was open to cooperation with UNS.

The journalism training materials were delivered by ANTARA TV reporter Denik Apriyani.
