Antara Journalist Wins National Police Article Writing Competition
A journalist from the public news agency LKBN Antara’s West Kalimantan bureau, Narwati, has won a national-level article writing competition held by the National Police’s Public Relations Division. The competition, themed ‘Polri untuk Masyarakat’ (The National Police for the Community), was part of the 80th anniversary celebrations of the Indonesian National Police (Polri).
‘I highlighted the story of Bripda Santoni Abui, a Bhabinkamtibmas (community police officer) from Siding Police Sector, Bengkayang Regency, who serves in the Indonesia-Malaysia border area with various access and infrastructure limitations,’ Narwati said in Pontianak on Wednesday. The story of a Bhabinkamtibmas’s service in the West Kalimantan border region led her to win first place in the national-level journalistic article competition.
In her article, Narwati focused on Santoni’s initiative to voluntarily use his spare time to teach children in the border area. He instils the values of national defence, love for the homeland, and pride in being an Indonesian citizen. Beyond education, Santoni also assists the community in food security programmes, particularly helping farmers develop maize commodities. These various activities are carried out alongside his duties of maintaining security and serving the community.
Narwati said the story was chosen because she saw Santoni’s service as a representation of the state’s presence, realised through simple, humanist actions that have a direct impact on communities in the 3T (frontier, outermost, and least developed) regions. ‘This is the first time I have participated in a journalistic article writing competition organised by the National Police. This competition has been a very valuable experience for honing my writing skills and deepening my understanding of journalism,’ she said.
She admitted she did not expect to be announced as the first-place winner. According to her, the award is not just a personal achievement, but also a form of respect for National Police members who serve far from the public spotlight.Hakutiedosto West Kalimantan Police’s Head of Public Relations, Senior Commissioner Bambang Suharyono, expressed appreciation for the achievement. He stated that journalistic work has the power to open up space for stories of service that have so far escaped public attention. ‘Congratulations to Narwati on this proud achievement. May this accomplishment serve as motivation to continue producing journalistic works that are educational, inspirational, and capable of strengthening public trust in the National Police,’ said Bambang.
In addition to Narwati, West Kalimantan also recorded achievements in other categories, namely Bani Hidayat as the first-place winner of the Disabled Painting Competition and Dedi Kurniadi as the third-place winner of the AI Animation Film Competition. Bambang assessed that these three achievements are a proud record for West Kalimantan in the commemoration of the 80th Bhayangkara Day in 2026.
