ANTAM Cuts Carbon Emissions by 9.43% Through Renewable Energy Use in Mining Operations
PT ANTAM (Persero) Tbk successfully reduced its carbon emissions by 9.43% throughout 2025, surpassing the target that had been set. By mid-2026, emission reductions had again exceeded the annual target, driven by accelerated energy efficiency programmes and increased utilisation of new and renewable energy.
ANTAM President Director Untung Budiharto stated that the achievement is part of the company’s decarbonisation strategy through optimising energy use and increasing the adoption of environmentally friendly energy, including solar photovoltaic (Solar PV) and biodiesel across various operational areas. "This year, up to the middle of the year, emission reductions have again surpassed the annual target. We continue to increase the use of renewable energy through Solar PV and biodiesel in our operational areas," he said during the Gerak Hijau 2026 event in Jakarta on Sunday (26/7/2026).
At the same event, Deputy Minister of Environment of the Republic of Indonesia Diaz Faisal Malik Hendropriyono expressed appreciation for ANTAM’s efforts. He noted that the company has demonstrated that mining activities can go hand in hand with environmental conservation. "I have heard how ANTAM has successfully exceeded its reclamation targets, reduced carbon emissions far beyond company targets, and continued to increase the use of renewable energy in its operations. Today, ANTAM is not only inviting us to walk together but also distributing thousands of tree seedlings to the community. Hopefully, the seedlings will not just stop in the boots of cars," he remarked.
Diaz emphasised that achieving sustainable development cannot rely solely on the government or the business sector. According to him, collaboration among all elements of society is the key to protecting the environment. "We often hear that protecting the environment is the government’s responsibility. Some say it is the responsibility of companies. Yet the answer is simple. Protecting the environment is the responsibility of all of us," Diaz stated.
Gerak Hijau 2026 is part of ANTAM’s 58th anniversary celebrations held in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment. On this occasion, ANTAM also commemorated World Mangrove Day by planting 5,000 mangrove seedlings as part of efforts to rehabilitate coastal ecosystems and enhance carbon sequestration. In addition to mangrove planting, the Gerak Hijau 2026 series of activities included a Fun Walk, waste management education, an SME bazaar, Junior Miners as an educational platform on mining for children, free tree seedling distribution, and a sustainable lifestyle campaign encouraging the public to adopt environmentally friendly habits in daily life.
