Ansett starts serving Jakarta

JAKARTA (JP): Ansett Australia launched a new service between Sydney and Jakarta yesterday.

Ansett's international director, Hugh Thorburn, said here that his company will initially serve the Jakarta-Sydney route twice a week, on Mondays and Fridays.

He said that the flight will also connect on to Kuala Lumpur.

In addition to Ansett Australia, which proudly lays claim to being the only airline to operate B-747-300 series airplanes between Indonesia and Australia, there are currently four other carriers linking the two nations, Garuda Indonesia (Airbus 300s), Merpati Nusantara Airlines (Boeing 737-200s), Sempati Air (Airbus 300s) and Qantas (Boeing 767-300 ERs).

Thorburn said that Ansett Australia will be doubling the number of flights to four with B-767 aircraft on May 1st. Ansett, which was established 60 years ago, started off operations in Indonesia by providing a service to Bali in 1993. It has since stepped up that service to land at Denpasar, the capital of Bali, every day. (icn)
