Another worker killed on building site
JAKARTA (JP): Another worker on the Taman Anggrek Mall project in West Jakarta has been killed in an on-site accident.
The unidentified victim fell from the project's high-rise building Sunday night.
On Friday one worker died and one was injured in on-site accidents.
Several workers have been killed since the construction project began in 1995.
Media reports said the latest accident brought the death toll to 19 but the project's management refused to comment.
Concerned over the project's worsening situation, Fauzi Ibrahim, the city chairman of the All-Indonesia Workers Union, yesterday urged the Department of Manpower's Jakarta office to check all equipment used in the project.
By law every developer has to set up a body to supervise worker safety.
Fauzi said the authorities could revoke the developer's building license if it did not provide the workers with safety equipment, especially as there have been casualties.
"But so far I have never heard any company having its license revoked for negligence," Fauzi said.
Deputy Governor for Social Affairs R.S. Museno said the company must be responsible for the accidents.
"I have asked the city office of the Ministry of Manpower to check on safety measures of the company," Museno said.
He said worker negligence could also be the cause of accidents.
He urged other construction projects to examine their safety measures. (05/02)
