Another stone war in Manggarai

JAKARTA (JP): Another stone war erupted between two groups of local residents near Manggarai railroad station in South Jakarta in the early hours of Friday.

The clash involved youths living in separate community units in the one neighborhood, Antara reported.

Erupted at 1 a.m. after the two groups had mocked each other for some time, the battle ended only after police officers arrived at 1:30 a.m. to calm the situation.

A similar incident rocked the slum area late last month, leaving one man injured and seven buildings vandalized.

"The residents involved in the fray pelted each other with rocks and wood with some vandalizing their opponents' houses," Satrya said.

The incident descended into total chaos after some of the residents threw molotov cocktails at the officers who were trying to disperse the angry crowd.

"It was a routine fight... The slum areas are known for being prone to riots," Suprayitno, one of local residents, said. (hhr)
