Another protest at Satyawacana

SALATIGA, Central Java: Hundreds of students and lecturers at
Satya Wacana Christian University held another demonstration
yesterday demanding democracy on campus.

The demonstrators also demanded to know the results determined
by a 10-member team assigned to seek a settlement to the
prolonged internal conflict.

The "Team 10" was set up to mediate for the various rival
groups formed following the highly controversial expulsion of
lecturer Arief Budiman last year.

Pro-Arief demonstrators have been demanding his reinstatement
and the dismissal of rector Jon JOI Ihalauw, whose election last
year was regarded as undemocratic by many. Several lecturers have
gone on strike to voice their demands.

"We will stop striking if conditions on campus return to
normal," said Nico L. Kana, a senior lecturer.(har/imn)
