Another Marriott bombing suspect tried

JAKARTA: Another alleged member of Jamaah Islamiyah (JI) terrorist network went on trial on Thursday for the deadly hotel bombing in Jakarta and faces death if convicted under an antiterrorism law.

Prosecutors accused Masrizal alias Ali Umar alias Mas'ud alias Tohir of surveying several possible targets before picking the US-franchised Marriott hotel as a high-profile and easy target.

The blast at the JW Marriott Hotel on Aug. 5, 2003, killed 11 Indonesians and a Dutch banker. At least four other people are on trial, accused of storing explosives for the Marriott attack. --AFP
