Bank Indonesia (BI) and the Bank of Korea have launched the Indonesia–South Korea Cross-Border QR Payment. This allows Indonesians to make transactions using the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) through domestic applications without needing to exchange foreign currency.

Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo stated that this launch is an important step in realising the shared vision of Indonesia and South Korea to build an integrated, efficient, and inclusive payment system as the foundation for digital economic connectivity between the two countries. “The connection of cross-border QR payments not only facilitates transactions but also strengthens SMEs, boosts tourism, and opens new opportunities for the business world, thereby supporting inclusive and sustainable economic growth,” Perry said in an official statement on Wednesday, 1 April 2026.

According to Perry, with cross-border QR, transactions can be conducted directly in local currencies, making them more efficient and low-cost. The initiative is part of the Joint Vision Statement between President Prabowo Subianto and President Lee Jae Myung, signed in South Korea.

Since its launch, Bank Indonesia has recorded 60.77 million QRIS users as of February 2026. In 2025, inbound transactions by foreign tourists in Indonesia reached 5,892,621 transactions. This figure exceeded outbound transactions by Indonesians abroad, which totalled 1,681,112 transactions.

Besides South Korea, QRIS can also be used in several other countries. As of February 2026, the collaboration with Thailand, established since August 2022, has recorded 1.64 million transactions worth Rp 656.27 billion. Meanwhile, the collaboration with Malaysia, started in May 2023, has recorded 10.66 million transactions worth Rp 2.75 trillion.

Furthermore, the cross-border QR with Singapore, launched in November 2023, has recorded 554,510 transactions worth Rp 179.28 billion. The collaboration with Japan since August 2025 has recorded 5,088 transactions worth Rp 428.80 million.
