Annual Flooding on Kuta's Dewi Sri Road Finally Addressed as Drainage Project Accelerates
The annual flooding that inundates Jalan Dewi Sri and its surroundings in Kuta District, Badung Regency, is finally being addressed. The Badung Regency Government has begun a strategic flood-control drainage project along the stretch from Jalan Basangkasa to Jalan Sunset Road, with a target completion date of November 2026, ahead of the peak rainy season in December.
The waterway improvement project covers an area of 6,330 square metres. Badung Regent I Wayan Adi Arnawa said the project could only be realised this year because its budget was made available in the 2026 main regional budget (APBD Induk).
“We have frequently carried out inspections in the past, but only now can the work begin because the funding has only just become available in the 2026 APBD Induk. So this year it can finally be executed,” said Adi Arnawa during a site inspection with Badung Deputy Regent Bagus Alit Sucipta on Saturday (18/7/2026).
According to Adi Arnawa, the wider drainage improvements are expected to minimise the flooding that has frequently occurred along Jalan Dewi Sri and its surroundings. He also instructed that the normalisation of the Tukad Mati stream be carried out routinely.
The inspection was also attended by Badung Regional Secretary I Bagus Surya Suamba, together with the heads of relevant regional apparatus organisations, the district head, village and hamlet heads, and local community figures. The drainage improvement is being undertaken because flooding in the Jalan Dewi Sri area has remained a recurring problem every rainy season.
“We hope that what the public has long been asking about now has its answer: that we are consistent and committed to doing the work. I ask residents to keep sorting their waste and not to litter, because no matter how large or how well built the drainage is, if the public does not support our programme, it will still be difficult,” said Adi Arnawa.
In addition to repairing the drainage, the Badung Regency Government will add water pumps with a capacity of 30,000 litres per second to extract overflow from the Tukad Mati stream towards Benoa Bay. The regency is also preparing the construction of retention ponds, or embung, in the Seminyak area as a long-term measure.
“Especially in front of the Seminyak Kelurahan office and the former Badung BPBD office, flooding occurs frequently, so these improvements will reduce it. Going forward, we will carry out the work in stages,” he said.
The Badung Regency Government is also planning the construction of embung to hold water flowing from northern areas during periods of heavy rainfall. These embung could later be used by the regional water company Perumda Air Minum Tirta Mangutama as a raw water source to be processed into clean water.
“Through this work, hopefully when it rains, this area will at least be safe. We hope the flooding will no longer be as severe as before,” said Deputy Regent Bagus Alit Sucipta.
