Annual Flooding on Kuta's Dewi Sri Road Finally Addressed as Drainage Project Accelerates

Flooding that annually inundates the Jalan Dewi Sri area and its surroundings in Kuta District, Badung Regency, has finally begun to be addressed. The Badung Regency Government is executing a strategic flood control drainage project on the Basangkasa Road to Sunset Road section, targeting completion by November 2026, ahead of the peak rainy season in December. The water channel improvement project covers an area of 6,330 square metres. Badung Regent I Wayan Adi Arnawa stated that the project could only be realised this year because the budget had become available in the 2026 Main Regional Budget (APBD Induk). “We have frequently visited to monitor the situation in the past, but only now can the work be carried out because the budget has just become available in the 2026 Main Regional Budget. So, it can only be executed this year,” said Adi Arnawa during a site inspection with Badung Vice Regent Bagus Alit Sucipta on Saturday (18/7/2026). According to Adi Arnawa, the wider drainage improvements are expected to minimise the flooding that has frequently occurred along Jalan Dewi Sri and its vicinity. He also instructed that the normalisation of the Tukad Mati waterway be carried out routinely. The inspection was also attended by Badung Regional Secretary I Bagus Surya Suamba along with heads of relevant regional apparatus organisations, district heads, village chiefs, and local community figures. The drainage improvement is being undertaken because inundation in the Jalan Dewi Sri area continues to be a recurring problem every rainy season. “Hopefully, what the community has been questioning will now be answered, showing that we are consistent and committed to the work. I ask the public to continue sorting their waste and not to litter. No matter how large or how good we make the drainage, if the community does not support our programme, it will still be difficult,” said Adi Arnawa. In addition to improving the drainage, the Badung Regency Government will add water pump machines with a capacity of 30,000 litres per second to siphon overflow from the Tukad Mati waterway towards Benoa Bay. The Badung Regency Government is also preparing the construction of a retention pond or reservoir in the Seminyak area as a long-term measure. “Especially in front of the Seminyak Urban Village office and the former Badung BPBD office, flooding often occurs, so the improvements being made will reduce flooding. Going forward, we will work on this in stages,” he said. The Badung Regency Government is also conceptualising the construction of a reservoir to hold water flow from the northern region during high-intensity rainfall. The reservoir can later also be utilised by the Tirta Mangutama Regional Water Company as a source of raw water to be processed into clean water. “Through this work, God willing, if rain occurs later, at least this area can be safe. We hope the flooding will no longer be as severe as before,” said Vice Regent Bagus Alit Sucipta.
