Annual "alarm" of affordable markets ahead of Ramadan
Situbondo (ANTARA) — An almost annual phenomenon repeats itself with predictable regularity: the prices of various staple goods rise ahead of the holy month of Ramadan, driven by surging market demand.
The increase in staple food prices ahead of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr is hardly a complex economic mystery. Growing demand for essential goods — for suhoor, breaking fast, the tradition of communal prayers during the fasting month, and Eid al-Fitr preparations — naturally pushes the price curve upward.
It is at this juncture that the state intervenes, activating its routine annual "alarm": the affordable market operation. The affordable market serves as a government policy instrument for measured economic management, with authorities consistently running the Affordable Food Movement programme, more commonly known as the affordable market operation.
The Situbondo regency government in East Java, in collaboration with the state logistics agency Perum Bulog, PT Sinergi Gula Nusantara (SGN), and other relevant stakeholders, has begun carrying out its annual routine activity by intensifying the affordable food movement.
The affordable market programme aimed at stabilising prices and the supply of staple goods ahead of Ramadan has commenced, in response to the surge in essential commodity prices caused by increased market demand.
The Situbondo regency administration, together with the local Bulog office, has begun efforts to stabilise staple food prices ahead of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah through the Affordable Food Movement at several locations.
Acting Head of the Situbondo Agriculture and Food Security Agency, Quratul Aini, stated that the affordable market programme for staple goods represents the local government's strategy to expand public access to essential commodities.
Furthermore, the affordable food movement aims to maintain the stability of staple food prices at a time when public demand and consumption are rising.
The government is endeavouring to suppress staple food prices in the market to prevent excessive spikes through market intervention, providing essential commodities to the public at prices below the maximum retail price, or HET (Harga Eceran Tertinggi).
