Annoyed by Ads on Your Android Phone? Here's How to Turn Them Off
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The appearance of advertisements in various Android applications often makes users feel uncomfortable. However, on the other hand, Android sites and applications do rely heavily on advertising as a primary source of revenue.
The problem becomes more serious when the ads are unsafe or even contain dangerous malware. In some cases, ads from certain browsers or applications can also appear in other applications, on the lock screen, and even on the home screen.
If the situation is too disruptive, there are actually several ways to remove or minimise ads on Android devices. Users can block ads through browser settings such as Google Chrome, and make adjustments to the home screen and wallpaper on various mobile phone brands such as Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and others.
Here are some steps to prevent persistent ads from appearing:
Block Ads from Chrome
Open Google Chrome on your Android device
Click the three dots menu in the top right corner to open “Settings”
Scroll down until you find “Site Settings”
Select “Pop-ups and redirects” and scroll the toggle to activate blocking pop-up ads
Go back to “Site Settings” and select “Ads”
Scroll to the right to activate the “Ads” toggle, which prevents dangerous ads from appearing
Block Ads from Home Screen
Ads that appear on the home screen are more disruptive than ads in browsers and other applications. These home screen ads often appear because of installing third-party applications that are ‘tricky’.
The application will trick users into opening permissions to get ads on the home screen. To block it, follow these steps.
Press and hold the app icon and open the info menu that appears
Scroll down until you find the “Display over other apps” option
Scroll to turn off the “Allow display over other apps” toggle
If you don’t really need the third-party application, it is best to uninstall it.
Block Ads from Wallpaper
The Glance wallpaper application is usually embedded on low-end and mid-range Samsung and Xiaomi phones. This application aims to improve the phone’s lock screen experience by providing recommendations, news, and partnership content.
Well, that partnership content often contains ads. In fact, ad-related content usually makes up a larger proportion. Here’s how to block it.
Swipe up from the home screen to open the app drawer menu
Select “Settings”
Scroll to “Lock Screen”
Open “Wallpaper Services”
Press the radio button next to “None”
To avoid ads appearing on your Android phone, it is best for users to limit downloading unclear third-party applications. In addition, it is a good idea to install paid applications so that ads do not appear.
