Anies Baswedan Highlights Dino Patti Djalal's Track Record: He is No Amateur Diplomat

The former Governor of Jakarta, Anies Baswedan, has shared his impressions of the former Indonesian Deputy Foreign Minister, Dino Patti Djalal. In a post on his Threads social media account, Anies described Djalal as a courageous diplomat.

Anies recounted that he first heard of Dino Patti Djalal during his university years. At that time, he heard news of a young Indonesian diplomat who bravely participated in the BBC World Debate, facing senior diplomat Ramos Horta amidst international scrutiny of Indonesia. “While studying at UGM, I heard news of a young Indonesian diplomat in London who dared to appear in the BBC World Debate against senior diplomat Ramos Horta, at a time when the international atmosphere was cornering Indonesia. That young Indonesian diplomat performed brilliantly to keep Indonesia’s name standing with dignity; that was the first time I heard his name,” Anies wrote on his Threads account on Wednesday, 3 June 2026.

Anies also recalled the first time he met Dino Patti Djalal in person while pursuing his PhD in Illinois, USA. According to him, Djalal demonstrated his capacity as a young diplomat who was intelligent, communicative, and capable of handling complex issues with impressive composure.

“A few years later, while pursuing my PhD in Illinois, we met in person. Dino came to Chicago to explain the situation of Indonesian students and the diaspora following 9/11. What we encountered was a young diplomat who was intelligent, articulate, and able to handle complex problems with a diplomatic calmness that is difficult to replicate,” Anies wrote.

Anies further detailed Dino Patti Djalal’s track record as a figure who has made significant contributions to the field of international relations. This includes his tenure as the Indonesian Ambassador to the United States in 2012, during which he initiated the first Indonesian Diaspora Congress in Los Angeles, bringing together the Indonesian diaspora from various countries. “He then founded the FPCI, the largest and most influential foreign policy community, which has helped produce a new generation of diplomats to serve as our spearhead on the global stage,” Anies concluded.
