Angry Surabaya people run amok

SURABAYA, East Java: About 600 residents of Jl. Kalirungkut in East Surabaya ran amok on Saturday evening after a property developer failed to bulldoze parts of the development which are causing flooding in the neighborhood.

Residents said that the building had blocked the flow of water, causing their houses to flood during recent heavy rain.

No fatalities were reported during the Saturday's disturbance. The developer of the Mega Raya shop-house blocks immediately met the residents' request.

"The developers and the local residents worked together this morning (yesterday) to demolish the part of the building that has disturbed the flow of water at the neighborhood," a police officer was quoted by Antara as saying. (bsr)
