Angry mob burns city minivan

TANGERANG (JP): Dozens of residents of Cipondoh district burned yesterday a city minivan allegedly driven by a 'migrant'. The action was in response to a clash Monday in which a local driver was killed.

The angry mob stopped the car and forced its passengers to leave before setting it on fire.

According to the locals, they were upset with migrants for hiding the man who allegedly stabbed the driver.

Police and eyewitnesses said the driver, Harun, 19, was stabbed after a heated argument with the suspect, Juhri, 30, Monday afternoon.

Juhri, who had blocked Harun's vehicle, felt insulted when the latter rudely yelled at him. He allegedly approached Harun, stabbed him in his stomach and then fled the scene, hiding in the home of a senior migrant.

Harun was rushed to a nearby hospital while other people chased after Juhri.

Local authorities and police officers said yesterday the suspect had been detained at the Tangerang Police precinct and urged the angry crowd to calm down.

By yesterday afternoon, hundreds of police and military personnel were on guard in Cipondoh and other areas of Tangerang to prevent further unrest. (41/bsr)
