Angry mob burn motorcycle

JAKARTA (JP): A crowd of angry residents in Jatipadang, South Jakarta burned a motorcycle yesterday morning after its driver recklessly ran into a local boy, police said.

A Jatipadang police officer said the unidentified driver immediately ran away from the scene after he hit the 11-year-old Erdispan.

The boy was rushed to the Fatmawati Hospital and is being treated for head injuries.

"The boy and some friends were strolling along Jl. RM Harsono after saur (the Ramadhan pre-dawn meal) and performing subuh (morning prayer) when the incident took place," said the police officer, who asked for anonymity.

Police said the motorcyclist was apparently speeding and failed to control his vehicle when he approached the teenagers.

Some witnesses were questioned to help clarify the incident and identify the driver. (cst)
