Angry buffalo sparks commotion

CIREBON, West Java: A female buffalo, which residents believed was "under heavy stress", went on the rampage yesterday through the city's streets, hurting three people and destroying several pedicabs.

Eyewitnesses theorized that the beast went mad upon seeing another buffalo bleed in agony as a butcher slit its neck, Antara reported.

The 150 kilogram excited buffalo crashed out of the slaughterhouse, ran down the street, hit an elementary school student in the head and destroyed pedicabs, whose drivers had run for their lives.

"The buffalo got even more excited when people screamed in panic and then hit another pedicab, hurting its oblivious driver," an eyewitness said.

It needed several dozen police and military officers, on two motorcycles and in three trucks, as well as dozens of citizens to overcome the raging buffalo. The drama was over after the military fired more than a dozen bullets at the animal. (pan)
