Angke river banks to be cleared

JAKARTA (JP): West Jakarta Mayor Sutardjianto has ordered all illegal buildings along the Angke river banks in Kedoya Utara subdistrict demolished.

Muhayat, a spokesman for the mayoralty, said on Wednesday that the demolition order was issued after the State Administrative Court dismissed a lawsuit filed to prevent the clearance by local residents.

"The area will be turned into a green belt area," Muhayat was quoted by Antara as saying.

He said that the demolition order is part of the mayoralty's efforts to uphold laws which prohibit people from building houses or other structures on state-owned land.

Illegal buildings in other districts, including Kembangan, Cengkareng and Tambora, will also face demolition. (hhr)
