Angga Dwimas Sasongko's Tips for Building Long-Term Intellectual Property (IP)
Director and CEO of Visinlam Pictures, Angga Dwimas Sasongko, has emphasised the importance of narrative strength in building sustainable intellectual property (IP). According to him, a story becomes real and enduring if it possesses universal values capable of touching a wide audience.
Angga explained that the key to long-term IP lies in the ability of the storytelling to be retold by others. This can only be achieved if the story manages to enter the collective memory of society.
“Characters or storytelling live because we can recount them to others. Telling it to others is successful if we possess a collective memory. When a story touches that collective memory, it connects across time and generations,” Angga stated during a discussion in Jakarta on Tuesday.
In designing IP that can be developed into various formats, Angga noted the need for mature and high-quality story concepts. Furthermore, creators must be able to build a “world” with clear artistic value and substance.
He emphasised that character development should not focus solely on the protagonist. The dynamic relationships with surrounding characters are crucial in determining the depth of an IP.
“We must be able to create a world artistically, and we need to have characters that build dynamic relationships—not just the main character, but the supporting characters as well,” he added.
With this approach, every character is expected to hold strong meaning rather than being mere window dressing. The goal is for the audience to be able to imagine themselves within the constructed world.
Furthermore, Angga explained that forms of intellectual property are highly diverse, ranging from stories and characters to events. He views IP as something institutional in nature.
According to Angca, the primary goal of creating IP is not merely to chase momentary audience numbers, but to create works that can be enjoyed across generations. This focus on long-term quality is what eventually fosters a loyal fanbase.
“The creation is not just to seek an audience, but to ensure the IP can be enjoyed across time and generations, which in turn is capable of creating fans,” he concluded.
