Jakarta — KontraS activist Andrie Yunus sustained chemical trauma to the eye, graded 3 on a scale of 4, after becoming the victim of an acid attack believed to have been carried out by personnel of BAIS TNI. The condition was disclosed during a hearing at Military Court II-08 Jakarta on Wednesday, 20 May 2026, through evidence provided by two ophthalmologists from Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) who were called as expert witnesses.

In this case, four BAIS TNI personnel are alleged to be involved: Sergeant Second Class Edi Sudarko, First Lieutenant Budhi Hariyanto Widhi, Captain Nandala Dwi Prasetya, and Lieutenant Sami Lakka.

‘Is the eye injury the result of a splash of acid or direct exposure?’ the military prosecutor asked in the courtroom.

Ophthalmologist Faraby Martha said that based on examinations, the chemical trauma to Andrie’s eye is classified as severe.

‘I cannot correlate the incident with the severity; all I know is that the severity is grade 3 out of 4. So the severity, the chemical eye trauma, is grade 3 of 4. In other words, severe,’ Faraby replied.

‘Grade 4 is the most severe,’ Faraby added.

The prosecutor then asked about the possibility of recovery, including whether the injury is temporary or permanent.

‘From the condition of the eye treated from the start until now, is it temporary or permanent?’ the prosecutor asked.

However, the question of vision function cannot yet be determined and requires periodic evaluation.

‘So the current focus of treatment is to preserve the anatomy of the eyeball; the eyeball remains round. Regarding function, we cannot yet say whether vision will return. And this will be evaluated periodically according to the patient’s clinical progress,’ Faraby answered.

Earlier, four Indonesian National Army (TNI) personnel were charged with carrying out the caustic-water spray against Deputy Coordinator of KontraS Andrie Yunus in central Jakarta.

The four defendants are Sergeant Second Class Edi Sudarko, First Lieutenant Budhi Hariyanto Widhi, Captain Nandala Dwi Prasetya, and Lieutenant Sami Lakka.

‘The defendants consider that Mr Andrie Yunus has insulted the TNI and even trampled the TNI institution,’ said Military Prosecutor Lieutenant Colonel of the Legal Corps (Chk) TNI Muhammad Iswadi at the hearing in Military Court II-08 Jakarta.

The defendants face multiple charges, namely Article 469(1) KUHP as the primary charge, Article 468(1) as a subsidiary, and Articles 467(1) and (2) as further subsidiary charges in conjunction with Article 20 letter c of Law Number 1 of 2023.
