Andrie Yunus's Eye Faces Potential Permanent Disability Following Acid Attack
The hope that activist Andrie Yunus’s eye condition would return to its original state appears unlikely.
Ophthalmologist Faraby Martha of Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) said the injury suffered by Andrie could potentially lead to permanent disability.
The testimony was disclosed in a continuation hearing in the case of an acid attack on Andrie Yunus, when Military Prosecutor II-07 Jakarta summoned two additional witnesses, namely a plastic surgeon and an ophthalmologist from RSCM.
‘Indeed, it is not possible to be normal one hundred percent. Similarly, I too have a scar on my leg from a past surgery… the scar remains, the scar from the removal of a tumor still remains. Well, is it similar to that? Usually after surgery there are sutures or something; it would be, even if we can carry out normal work,’ asked the judge in the courtroom, on Wednesday, 20 May 2026.
‘So indeed for this chemical trauma grade three, it is severe. It is difficult to see, to see again as before. Although we have tried to keep the eyeball spherical, because it had ruptured, we have repaired it,’ Faraby replied.
The judge then reinforced the question about the possibility of permanent impact on Andrie’s vision as a result of the incident.
‘Because it’s grade three. Grade three means there is a possibility of recovery or not; it depends on the person. That is what the doctor said. So the injury or trauma to the eye of the victim here may result in permanent disability?’ asked the judge.
‘Possible,’ Faraby replied.
‘But it could also recover? But the chances are small?’ asked the judge.
‘Yes, small,’ he explained.
‘Mr Andrie Yunus cannot even read the largest letter because his vision is very poor. He can only distinguish light, whether light is present or not,’ Faraby said.
Faraby explained that the medical team last examined Andrie on 8 May 2026 to monitor the progression of his condition.
From those results, Andrie’s condition was described as showing no meaningful change and remaining at the same stage as before.
