Andrie Yunus Permanently Disabled; Four BAIS Soldiers Face Only 2.5-Year Prison Sentence
Four soldiers from the Headquarters Detachment of the Indonesian Military Intelligence Agency (BAIS) TNI have been charged with 2 years and 6 months of imprisonment in connection with the acid attack on the Vice Coordinator of External Affairs at Kontras, Andrie Yunus. The sentencing demand, read during a session at the Military Court II-08 Jakarta on Wednesday (3/6), has drawn sharp criticism due to the stark contrast between the sentence and the victim’s condition, as he remains under intensive hospital care.
Military Prosecutor II-07 Jakarta, Lieutenant Colonel Chk Muhammad Iswadi, stated that the four defendants—Sergeant Edi Sudarko, Lieutenant Budhi Hariyanto Widhi, Captain Nandala Dwi Prasetyo, and Lieutenant Sami Lakka—were proven to have legally committed premeditated assault resulting in serious injury. Their actions were charged under Article 467, paragraphs (1) and (2) of the 2023 Criminal Code (KUHP).
“We request the Military Court II-08 Jakarta to impose punishment on the defendants,” the Prosecutor stated during the reading of the charges.
Trial facts revealed that this brutal act was triggered by negative sentiment towards Andrie Yunus. The victim was perceived to have insulted the dignity of the TNI after interrupting a closed-door meeting regarding the TNI Law Revision at the Fairmont Hotel in March 2025. The Prosecutor described the soldiers’ actions as extra-legal revenge that damages the reputation of the TNI institution on an international scale.
Although acknowledging that the defendants’ actions contravened the ‘Sapta Marga’ (Military Code of Ethics) and the Soldier’s Oath, the Prosecutor included mitigating factors, namely the defendants’ honesty and their clean criminal records. This formed the basis for the 2.5-year prison demand, which appears minimal compared to the permanent suffering endured by the victim.
A notable irregularity emerged as Andrie Yunus was never examined as a victim within the case files. The Advocacy for Democracy Team (TAUD) has firmly rejected Andrie’s presence as an additional witness, citing a lack of trust in the military justice mechanism for handling general criminal offences.
According to medical data from RSCM as of 12 May 2026, Andrie Yunus is still in the recovery phase following follow-up surgery. He is being treated by a multidisciplinary team, including plastic surgery and ophthalmology specialists, to save his vision and treat the chemical burns caused by the acid.
