Indonesia’s Deputy Minister of Human Rights Mugiyanto has strongly condemned an acid attack on Andrie Yunus, deputy coordinator of the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS), in Jakarta. He described the attack as a serious threat to citizens’ freedom to voice criticism and advocate for human rights.

Speaking on Friday, 13 March, Mugiyanto stated: “I strongly condemn the caustic liquid attack against Andrie Yunus that occurred last night in Jakarta.” He emphasised that violence against human rights defenders cannot be tolerated in a state that upholds the rule of law and human rights, and that such acts must not be normalised.

Mugiyanto underscored that every citizen has the right to express views, offer criticism, and advocate on public issues without fear of violence. He argued that attacks on individuals because of their human rights work not only threaten individual safety but also undermine democratic principles.

The Deputy Minister called on law enforcement to investigate the incident thoroughly and transparently, so that the perpetrator and motive become clear. He stressed that firm law enforcement is crucial to prevent the impression that violence against human rights defenders can occur without legal consequences.

Mugiyanto emphasised that the state has a duty to protect all citizens, including those engaged in human rights advocacy. He noted that protections for human rights defenders are being incorporated into the government’s ongoing amendments to the Human Rights Law.

He further stated that the attack contradicts the current government’s agenda, including the national development vision that places respect for human rights as a fundamental principle. Mugiyanto expressed deep sympathy to Andrie Yunus and his family, hoping he receives the best medical care and recovers quickly.

The Deputy Minister concluded by emphasising that the Ministry of Human Rights will continue to monitor the case’s development to ensure that the legal process proceeds seriously, delivers justice for the victim, and prevents similar incidents from recurring. The National Police Commission (Kompolnas) has also strongly condemned the caustic liquid attack.
