Andrie Yunus Allegedly Monitored Before Acid Attack; Attacker's Face Clearly Captured on CCTV
Jakarta — Andrie Yunus, Deputy Coordinator of the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence, was allegedly monitored by unknown individuals several days before becoming a victim of an acid attack in Central Jakarta on the evening of Thursday, 12 March 2026.
Muhammad Isnur, Chairman of the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI), discovered indications that Andrie’s activities had been tracked by certain parties in recent days.
“We have the evidence. We have traced that over the past several days Andrie was monitored from his home, from his boarding house, and from the places he visited,” Isnur said at the YLBHI office in Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Friday, 13 March 2026.
He added that the alleged surveillance also occurred whilst Andrie was active at several locations on the day before the incident.
“All yesterday, from the Celios office, from YLBHI he was being followed. The individuals are clear, all recorded on CCTV,” he stated.
The investigation began on Thursday evening, shortly after the acid attack occurred.
According to Isnur, the formation of an independent investigation team was undertaken as a precautionary measure should the authorities’ handling of the case proceed slowly.
He stated that civil society was drawing lessons from the handling of the August 2025 demonstrations case.
“We do not fully trust. The August incident, how its disclosure was revealed publicly by the independent Fact-Finding Committee. Therefore, civil society from last night has taken the initiative to also conduct our own investigation,” explained Isnur.
Dimas Bagus Arya, Coordinator of the KontraS Working Body, stated the incident occurred around 23:37 Western Indonesia Time as Andrie was riding a motorcycle on Jalan Salemba I–Talang, Senen, Central Jakarta.
Upon passing the location, two perpetrators riding a tandem motorcycle, allegedly a Honda Beat model from 2016–2021, approached the victim from the opposite direction on Jalan Talang (Talang Bridge).
“The perpetrators are two men who carried out their operation using one motorcycle, each serving the roles of driver and passenger,” Dimas stated in a written statement confirmed by Kompas.com on Friday.
Dimas explained that the perpetrator acting as the driver wore a white-and-blue combination shirt, dark trousers believed to be denim, and a black helmet.
Meanwhile, the second perpetrator sitting at the back wore a face covering or mask resembling a black buff that covered half of the face, a dark blue shirt, and blue long trousers rolled up short and believed to be denim.
As a result of the attack, Andrie immediately screamed in pain and dropped his motorcycle.
The victim was then taken to a hospital in Jakarta for emergency medical treatment after suffering burns to both hands, face, chest, and eyes.
