Andre Rosiade Inaugurates Two Minang Student Dormitories in Yogyakarta
Chairman of the DPP Ikatan Keluarga Minangkabau (IKM), Andre Rosiade, inaugurated two Minangkabau student dormitories in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, namely Asrama Mahasiswi Bundo Kanduang and Asrama Mahasiswa Marapi Singgalang.
This inauguration represents a strategic step by the DPP IKM in strengthening the organisation’s role as a bond for maintaining relationships while serving as a centre for nurturing the young Minangkabau generation in distant lands.
The inauguration was conducted directly by Andre along with the DPP IKM’s daily management board. The event proceeded solemnly, beginning at Asrama Mahasiswi Bundo Kanduang at 4:30 PM WIB and continuing at Asrama Mahasiswa Marapi Singgalang at 5:30 PM WIB. The presence of these two facilities is emphasised not merely as providing housing, but as building centres for character and identity development for the young Minangkabau generation abroad.
“This building is not just a place to live, but also a centre for nurturing the young Minangkabau generation to remain steadfast in traditional values and culture,” said Andre in his statement on Thursday (23/4/2026).
He made this remark during his speech at the inauguration of Asrama Mahasiswi Bundo Kanduang and Asrama Mahasiswa Marapi Singgalang on Wednesday (22/4).
According to this Deputy Chairman of Commission VI of the DPR RI, both dormitories are the result of the struggles of Minangkabau migrants in Yogyakarta, who from the outset collaboratively raised funds to purchase land and construct the facilities. Their management was then handed over to the West Sumatra Provincial Government. However, limited regional budgets necessitated support for renovations.
“Through collaboration between the DPP IKM with Semen Indonesia Group and Hutama Karya, renovations were carried out in stages. In addition to building repairs, assistance also includes supporting facilities such as refrigerators, washing machines, and plans to provide wardrobes and CCTV to improve the comfort and security of the residents,” said Andre, who is also the Chairman of the Gerindra Sumbar DPD.
Andre emphasised that both dormitories are open to all Minangkabau students without organisational or community barriers. This spirit of inclusivity forms the main foundation for strengthening unity among Minang migrants in Yogyakarta.
“The main point is, if you’re Minang people, use this building. But let’s maintain and utilise it as best as possible,” stressed this Deputy Chairman of the Gerindra Faction in the DPR RI.
As a form of ongoing attention to students abroad, Andre also conveyed additional commitments in the form of a free homecoming programme with 10 buses for Minangkabau students in Yogyakarta during Eid 2027. This programme is estimated to transport around 450 students returning to West Sumatra.
“So, for Eid 2027, we open opportunities again for Minang students in Yogyakarta to join the Basamo homecoming programme. If in 2026 there were five buses, next year 10 buses,” he said.
Furthermore, the inauguration of Asrama Bundo Kanduang and Marapi Singgalang simultaneously symbolises the strengthening of IKM’s role as the Rumah Gadang for Minang migrants, uniting the potential of the Minangkabau diaspora.
“The DPP IKM is optimistic that the presence of these facilities will encourage Minangkabau students in Yogyakarta to focus more on their education, achieve excellence, and grow as a generation of good character, cultured, and ready to contribute to the region and the nation,” said Andre.
For information, the inauguration event was attended by various strategic figures, from government institution representatives, SOEs, to networks of Minang migrants in Central Java and surrounding areas. Among those present were the President Director of Semen Indonesia Group (SIG), Indrieffouny Indra; Director II of Hutama Karya, Mardiansyah, as well as the DPW IKM Yogyakarta board and DPD for Districts/Cities.
