Andre Rosiade Backs Batam as Data Centre Hub, Urges Gas and Electricity Availability
Deputy Chair of Commission VI of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Andre Rosiade, has expressed support for Batam to become one of Indonesia’s data centre investment hubs. He said the opportunity must be underpinned by readiness of land and an adequate electricity supply.
Andre made the remarks during a Specific Working Visit by Commission VI to Batam in the Riau Islands, which addressed a number of strategic matters, ranging from investment and green energy development to the development of a data centre ecosystem.
“We came here deliberately to look at how we can support Batam becoming a location for data centre investment,” Andre Rosiade said in a statement on Monday (7 September 2026).
Andre said that, based on the meetings held, he saw readiness on the part of BP Batam and PLN Batam to support data centre investment, particularly in terms of providing land and electricity.
“Thankfully, we can see the readiness of both BP Batam and PLN Batam to provide land availability as well as electricity,” he said.
However, the Deputy Chair of the Gerindra Party faction in the House judged that readiness of electricity infrastructure must be accompanied by guarantees of gas supply for PLN Batam. He said competitively priced gas availability is one of the key factors in ensuring PLN Batam can supply the electricity needed by the data centre industry.
“Commission VI will certainly give its full support to measures enabling PLN Batam to obtain gas that is both available and affordable, so that PLN Batam can supply electricity for data centres. This is our homework,” he asserted.
The Secretary of the Gerindra Party faction in the House added that Commission VI will soon coordinate with Commission XII over the gas supply that is limited until the end of the year.
“Yes, we will soon discuss this with colleagues in Commission XII. If a joint meeting of Commission VI and Commission XII is indeed necessary, we will hold it, subject to the approval of the House leadership,” he said.
Separately, Andre revealed that PT Telkom Indonesia is currently preparing concrete steps to develop its data centre business. Based on information he received, Telkom is preparing the tender process for data centre facilities in Batam and Cikarang.
“Telkom will certainly prepare its roadmap. What I can say based on the information I have now is that Telkom is preparing a tender, in both Batam and Cikarang, after this,” said Andre.
He also explained that hyperscale facility development will be carried out through cooperation schemes. Meanwhile, on the issue of data security, Andre stressed that the involvement of state-owned enterprises in data centre investment must go hand in hand with readiness to safeguard the security and control of data.
“Once again, SOEs will certainly ensure data security. It is impossible for SOEs to make this investment if they are not prepared to secure that data,” he concluded.
