Andra Soni Emphasises Free School Programme to Address Dropout Crisis
Banten Governor Andra Soni has reaffirmed that the Free School Programme is a top priority in his leadership alongside Deputy Governor Achmad Dimyati Natakusumah. The programme is designed to improve access to educational services for communities, particularly families constrained by costs.
“I have encountered many children who are not attending school due to financial constraints. Therefore, this Free School Programme is our effort to ensure our young people receive quality educational services,” said Andra in a written statement on Monday (9 March 2026).
Andra made these remarks whilst attending a ‘Joint Prayer for the Nation and Aid for 1,000 Orphans’ event initiated by BISON (National Objective Strategy Intellectual Battalion) Indonesia in Cipocok Jaya, Serang City, on Sunday (8 March).
Andra outlined the Free School Programme for senior secondary, vocational, and private religious schools, which has been implemented in the 2025-2026 academic year. To date, the programme has benefited 60,705 students spread across 801 private schools throughout Banten Province.
“Parents no longer need to worry about school fees as these are covered by the Banten Provincial Government,” explained Andra.
In addition to fee waivers at private schools, the Banten Provincial Government has established four People’s Schools, which form part of the priority programme of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.
These schools are located in Serang City (one unit), Lebak Regency (two units), and South Tangerang City (one unit). These facilities are dedicated to children from underprivileged families.
Support for Free Nutritious Meals
During the event, Andra also interacted with orphans regarding the Free Nutritious Meals programme.
Andra ensured that the programme has a positive impact on students’ enthusiasm for learning in the classroom.
“Let us pray that President Prabowo remains in good health so that this programme can continue,” said Andra.
In closing his remarks, Andra emphasised that education and health are two inseparable pillars in developing human resources in Banten.
“If a person is educated, God willing they can maintain their health. Conversely, if a person is healthy, God willing they can pursue their education to the fullest,” he concluded.
