Defence Minister (Menhan) Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin held a meeting with several retired military officers and former TNI Commanders amid unrelenting geopolitical tensions. The meeting took place for more than two hours at the Ministry of Defence office in Jakarta on Friday (24/4). Several TNI retirees who attended included former ABRI Commander Wiranto, former TNI Commanders Yudo Margono, Agus Suhartono, Andika Perkasa, Djoko Suyanto, and Gatot Nurmantyo, as well as former Kopassus Deputy Commander Agum Gumelar. Also present were former KSAD Dudung Abdurachman, former KSAL Siwi Sukma Adji, Marsetio, and several other retirees. Head of Information at the Ministry of Defence Secretariat General, Brigadier General Rico Ricardo Sirait, stated that the meeting discussed developments in national defence policy, including strategies for the future development of TNI strength. One of these was the plan to build Territorial Development Battalions. According to Rico, the TNI has targeted the construction of 150 Territorial Development Battalions each year. “This includes explanations from the Defence Minister and the TNI Commander regarding the future development of TNI strength, and the plan to build 150 Territorial Development Battalions every year,” he said. Meanwhile, according to Rico, the retirees at the forum provided input on the issue of the Letter of Intent (LoI) for overflight clearance with the US. Foreign media had previously reported allegations of a final agreement regarding US military airspace access in Indonesian territory, although this has been denied by the Ministry of Defence. They also highlighted the incident involving three TNI soldiers killed in Lebanon. “The retirees naturally have valuable considerations and analyses, so these may also be discussed with relevant ministries and agencies, as well as the DPR, regarding that Letter of Intent,” Rico said.
