The Liang Bua archaeological site in Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, is once again the focus of international attention. The location, known globally for the discovery of Homo floresiensis or the ‘Hobbit’, is now a research site involving scientists from various countries. One of the researchers currently conducting work at Liang Bua is Hannes, a German archaeologist who is part of an international team. Together with colleagues, he is researching the preservation of ancient DNA within the cave’s environment. According to Hannes, his involvement stems from collaboration with archaeologists who have long studied the historic site. “We are cooperating with archaeologists there, and I came to know Liang Bua through this research work,” Hannes told reporters on Wednesday (10/6). During approximately three weeks in Indonesia, the research team assessed the possibility of ancient DNA surviving within the cave’s layers. They are also examining various faunal remains found at the site. “We are here to evaluate DNA preservation in Liang Bua Cave and to explore the existing fauna. We will present our findings,” he said. The research is expected to enrich understanding of prehistoric life on Flores and provide a deeper picture of the ancient environment and ecosystem in the region. Hannes expressed admiration for his experience in Indonesia, noting that the research environment he encountered was very supportive and provided a positive experience. “I have had a very positive experience in Indonesia. Very, very positive,” he stated. Meanwhile, Manggarai Regent Heribertus Nabit affirmed that Liang Bua is a crucial asset with immense scientific, historical, and tourism value. Therefore, management of the area must be carried out sustainably, maintaining a balance between site conservation and tourism development. According to Heribertus Nabit, the Manggarai Regency Government continues to promote the development of Liang Bua as a premier tourism destination based on science, history, and cultural heritage. “We want Liang Bua to become a destination that not only attracts tourists but also becomes a globally recognised centre for education and research. Its development must benefit the surrounding community while preserving the authenticity and important values of this site,” he said. He added that the increasing visits by international researchers to Liang Bua prove the site holds a significant position in the study of human evolution and the history of civilisation. Therefore, synergy between the government, academics, site managers, and the community needs to be continuously strengthened so that Liang Bua becomes better known globally.
