Analyst: Bahlil could become public favourite if he changes communication style
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Political communication analyst Hendri Satrio has suggested that Bahlil Lahadalia could become a public favourite if he changes the way he communicates publicly.
In a video clip that went viral on TikTok, Bahlil appeared calm and relaxed as he recounted his background and journey to becoming Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM).
"From his story, his life struggle is truly extraordinary, and reaching a political position like this makes it even more remarkable. It can serve as an inspiration for those of us who come from difficult backgrounds," said Hensa (his familiar name) in a statement in Jakarta on Saturday.
He praised Bahlil's communication style in the video, noting that the kind of calm, understated public communication displayed was what the public appreciates.
"If Bahlil's communication style becomes more courteous, composed and calm, then it is entirely possible he will win over the public," Hensa said.
He noted that Bahlil frequently speaks about his background and political struggles, likely with the aim of inspiring the public. Beyond that, the Golkar Party chairman is also seen as offering solutions to public policy issues.
Nevertheless, he said Bahlil's manner of delivering messages and his public communication tends not to side with ordinary people, frequently generating negative public sentiment.
"At present, I see Bahlil's communication style as too representative of the elite, unlike when he tells the story of his struggles starting out as an ordinary citizen. That is what leads the public to hold negative sentiment towards him," Hensa said.
For this reason, he said Bahlil could win public hearts by changing his communication approach. Moreover, the positive effects would also be felt by the Golkar Party.
"If Bahlil is willing to change his public communication to be more populist, I am confident the effect would not only benefit him personally but also the party he currently leads, namely Golkar, as it would have a leader capable of winning over the public," Hensa said.
