Anak Krakatau Volcano Status Raised to Level III Alert

The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has raised the activity level of Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait between Lampung and Banten. The status of Anak Krakatau has been elevated from Level II (Advisory) to Level III (Standby).

Acting Head of the Geological Agency, Lana Saria, stated that the increase was based on visual and instrumental monitoring results which show a significant rise in the volcano’s activity in recent times. Observation data indicates an increase in volcanic seismicity, changes in the mountain’s body deformation, and surface activity suggesting a supply of magma to the shallow parts.

“This increase in activity indicates a supply of magma to the surface, therefore the public and tourists are asked not to approach the active crater within the recommended radius,” Lana Saria said, as reported by Antara on Friday (3/7/2027).

Furthermore, tiltmeter readings from several observation stations also show an inflationary trend, indicating an accumulation of pressure within the volcanic body. The Geological Agency recommends that residents, fishermen, and tourists do not approach Mount Anak Krakatau within a 5-kilometre radius of the active crater to avoid the potential danger of eruptions or incandescent material ejection.

Communities along the coast of the Sunda Strait are also urged to remain calm but to increase their vigilance and follow the directives of local governments and volcano monitoring officers. Local governments and related agencies have been asked to prepare mitigation measures and strengthen coordination should there be a further increase in activity.

The Geological Agency emphasised that monitoring of Mount Anak Krakatau is being conducted intensively 24 hours a day using seismic, deformation, and visual observation networks to ensure that developments in volcanic activity can be detected early.
