The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) on Friday, 3 July 2026, raised the activity level of Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait, between the west coast of Lampung and Banten, from Level II (Waspada) to Level III (Siaga).

Acting Head of the Geological Agency, Lana Saria, stated that the status upgrade was based on visual and instrumental monitoring results showing a significant increase in the volcano’s activity in recent times. Observation data indicated an increase in volcanic earthquakes, changes in the body deformation of the volcano, and surface activity suggesting a supply of magma moving towards the shallow parts.

‘This increase in activity indicates a supply of magma to the surface, so the public and tourists are asked not to approach the active crater within the recommended radius,’ Lana Saria said, quoted on Saturday, 4 July 2026.

He added that monitoring results from tiltmeters at several observation stations also showed a tendency for inflation, indicating an accumulation of pressure within the volcano’s body.

The Geological Agency recommends that residents, fishermen, and tourists not approach Mount Anak Krakatau within a five-kilometre radius of the active crater to avoid the potential danger of eruptions or incandescent material ejections.

Communities along the coast of the Sunda Strait are also urged to remain calm but to increase their vigilance and follow the directives of local governments and volcano monitoring officers.

Local governments and related agencies have been asked to prepare mitigation measures and strengthen coordination should there be a further increase in activity. The Geological Agency emphasised that monitoring of Mount Anak Krakatau is conducted intensively 24 hours a day using seismic networks, deformation tools, and visual observations to ensure that developments in volcanic activity can be detected early.
