The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has lowered the activity level of Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait from Level III (Alert) to Level II (Caution), effective from Monday night.

Lana Saria, Head of the Geological Agency, reported in Jakarta on Monday that this status downgrade was established after a thorough analysis and evaluation of declining volcanic activity and deformation data, which indicated signs of deflation.

Previously, the activity level of the Type A active volcano had been raised to Level III (Alert) on 2 July 2026 due to increased seismicity and deformation. During that period, Mount Anak Krakatau recorded 224 eruptions up until 3 September 2026.

The volcano also experienced continuous eruptions for 25 hours between 4 and 6 September 2026, producing lava flows towards the northwest, west, and southwest.

However, following those events and seven Strombolian eruptions, volcanic activity was recorded as tending to decrease up until 20 September 2026.

In line with this decrease in activity, the Geological Agency has issued a recommendation that the public, tourists, and climbers avoid approaching or engaging in activities within a two-kilometre radius of the crater’s centre to anticipate the danger of volcanic rock projections and heavy ashfall.

Furthermore, residents in the coastal areas of Banten and Lampung provinces are urged to remain calm and not to believe misleading rumours regarding eruptions being linked to potential tsunami threats.

The public is advised to continue their activities as usual while remaining vigilant and following directions from the local Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD).
