Anak Krakatau Volcano Erupts Twice Tonight, Public Urged to Keep Away

Mount Anak Krakatau, located in the waters of South Lampung Regency, Lampung, erupted on Monday evening. Residents have been urged not to approach within a distance of three kilometres.

The Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Centre (PVMBG) recorded two eruptions in quick succession. The first eruption occurred at 19:43 WIB. The height of the eruption column was not observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 51 millimetres and a duration of 27 seconds.

One minute later, Mount Anak Krakatau erupted again at 19:44 WIB and was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 51 millimetres and a duration of 92 seconds.

Andi Suwardi, head of the Mount Anak Krakatau monitoring post in South Lampung, said the eruptive activity still needs to be monitored intensively. The public has been asked not to approach the volcanic area.

“The eruption is still ongoing and the activity of Mount Anak Krakatau continues to be monitored. We urge the public, visitors and tourists not to approach Mount Anak Krakatau,” he said.
