Anak Krakatau Volcano Erupts Nine Times, Alert Level III

The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Centre (PVMBG) has reported significant volcanic activity at Mount Anak Krakatau, located in South Lampung Regency, Lampung Province. On Saturday (22/8), the active volcano was recorded as having erupted nine times within a six-hour period.

Suwarno, head of the Anak Krakatau monitoring post in Hargopancuran, Rajabasa District, confirmed that the series of eruptions occurred between 12.00 WIB and 18.00 WIB. The height of the resulting ash columns varied, ranging from 200 to 400 metres above the crater summit.

“Mount Anak Krakatau was observed erupting nine times with heights of 200-400 metres. The smoke was grey and black in colour with thick intensity,” Suwarno said in an official statement on Saturday.

Based on instrumental observations, this volcanic activity has shown considerable fluctuation. The increase in volcanic activity since early July has formed the basis for the Geological Agency to set the status of Mount Anak Krakatau at Level III (Alert). Suwarno stressed that the potential for further eruptions remains highly likely given the mountain’s still-fluctuating condition.

In light of these conditions, the volcanology authorities have issued a number of strict recommendations for public safety. To date, the expert team continues to conduct intensive monitoring both visually and through instrumental equipment at the monitoring post in order to detect the ongoing development of volcanic activity.
