Anak Krakatau Volcano Erupts Eight Times, Remains on Alert Status

Mount Anak Krakatau in South Lampung, Lampung, experienced eight eruptions in a single day. The eruptions, accompanied by incandescent lava fountains, occurred while the volcano’s activity remained at Level III, or Siaga (Alert).

Muhammad Dika Nurzaman, an officer at the Anak Krakatau Volcano Observation Post of the Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), Geological Agency, said the eight eruptions were recorded during the observation period on Sunday (16/8/2026) from 00.00 to 24.00 WIB.

“Eight eruptions were observed with heights of 200 to 300 metres above the crater peak, with grey and black smoke observed. In addition to the eruptions, incandescent lava fountains were also observed,” Dika said in an official report received in Jakarta on Monday (17/8/2026).

Based on visual observations, Mount Anak Krakatau was clearly visible until it became covered in fog. Crater smoke was observed to be white, grey, and black, with thin to thick intensity.

The smoke rose to heights of approximately 10 to 300 metres above the peak. Volcanic activity was also evident from the high seismicity recorded throughout the observation period.
