Mount Anak Krakatau has been erupting since Friday night, 4 September 2026. Volcanic ash from the eruption has been felt by residents in the Jabodetabek (Greater Jakarta) region. However, the government has not yet decided whether to implement distance learning (PJJ) for students.

The Head of the Government Communications Agency (Bakom), M. Qodari, explained that they will coordinate with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education.

“Regarding the question just raised directed at the Ministry of Education, we will also coordinate with the Ministry of Home Affairs to obtain updates from every affected province, regency, and city resulting from the Anak Krakatau eruption. Therefore, God willing, there will be a subsequent update,” Qodari stated during a press conference on Sunday, 6 September 2026.

Qodari noted that the decision regarding distance learning will be based on the level of air pollution occurring. The decision will also be determined by local governments.

“However, I can say here that based on experience in other places, such as the forest and land fires in Kalimantan and Sumatra, regarding education, past decisions were based on the level of pollution and the pollution indicators occurring in each location. If it meets the criteria of being dangerous, then space or the opportunity will be given to the relevant local governments to conduct distance learning or online learning,” he said.

On that occasion, Qodari mentioned that President Prabowo Subianto is monitoring the eruptive activity of Mount Anak Krakatau. The Head of State has instructed his staff to prioritise the safety of the public affected by the volcanic ash.

“First, the President and the Government are closely monitoring the development of Mount Anak Krakatau’s activity, along with every potential impact. All monitoring is conducted based on data and recommendations from technical agencies. The safety and security of the public are the top priorities for the President and the Government,” said Qodari.

Furthermore, Prabowo has urged the public affected by volcanic ash to wear masks and goggles when engaging in outdoor activities.

“The President and the Government urge all citizens to remain calm and vigilant while volcanic ash continues to fall. All affected citizens can take the following steps. First, use masks to cover the nose and mouth,” he added.
