Light volcanic ashfall resulting from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau began affecting the coastal mainland of Banten, specifically around the Pasaurante Volcano Monitoring Post (PGA) in Anyer, Serang Regency, on Saturday night.

The Head of the Anak Krakatau PGA Post in Pasauran, Deni Mardiono, stated in Serang on Saturday night that the distribution of volcanic material was carried by winds moving towards the eastern region or the Banten coast.

“As for the current condition at the Pasauran post, it has been affected by very thin volcanic ash. This can be seen from CCTV footage, which shows ash scattering widely. This ash depends on the wind direction, so it is highly likely the wind is blowing east, carrying it towards the Banten coast,” said Deni.

He explained that the potential spread of volcanic ash depends entirely on wind movement. Currently, the intensity of the ash falling around the monitoring post area is still categorised as very light.

Meanwhile, based on direct field observations until 20:40 WIB, volcanic activity in the Sunda Strait waters remains intense. The visual eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau appeared to emit a bright red light accompanied by flashes of lightning.

The eruption also continues to produce simultaneous rumbling sounds and loud explosions. The strength of the sound waves from this eruption even caused doors, window panes, and even cupboards inside the monitoring post to vibrate.

Despite the eruption being accompanied by light ashfall and loud explosions, Deni ensured that the volcano’s activity level has not increased from previous levels.

“Mount Anak Krakatau is currently still at Level III, or Alert. The public or tourists must not approach within a three-kilometre danger radius from the crater,” he emphasised.
