Anak Krakatau Activity Remains High, Eruption Could Occur at Any Time
The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has explained the latest developments regarding the activity of Mount Anak Krakatau. The agency stated that Anak Krakatau still has the potential to erupt given the high level of volcanic activity currently under way.
“Volcanic activity at Mount Anak Krakatau is currently still high, as indicated by the recording of earthquakes associated with volcanic activity at the mountain,” the Geological Agency wrote on its X account on Monday (7/9/2026).
“This shows that an eruption could occur again at any time,” it continued.
Intensive monitoring continues to be carried out by the Geological Agency through the Anak Krakatau Volcano Observation Posts located in Pasauran, Banten, and Kalianda, Lampung. All monitoring data are analysed and evaluated by volcano experts at the agency.
Based on monitoring from 06.00 to 12.00 WIB today, 17 low-frequency earthquakes were recorded. These are low-frequency quakes that may be linked to the dynamics of volcanic fluids.
The Geological Agency also recorded 23 hybrid earthquakes at Anak Krakatau today. These quakes signal several phases that may reflect rock fracturing and fluid movement.
In addition, the agency recorded 9 harmonic tremors as well as continuous tremors at Mount Anak Krakatau today. Based on this monitoring, the volcano remains at Level III, or Alert status.
Continuous Eruption of Anak Krakatau Ends After 25 Hours
The continuous eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau, located in South Lampung, ended after 25 hours. The eruption characteristics of the volcano have changed.
“Three Strombolian eruptions occurred after the continuous eruption episode ended,” the Geological Agency said via its Threads account @badan.geologi on Monday (7/9/2026).
The continuous eruption episode at Mount Anak Krakatau began on Friday (4/9) at 23.07 WIB and ended on Sunday (6/9) at 00.04 WIB. The volcano is now experiencing Strombolian eruptions.
For information, a Strombolian eruption is a type of volcanic eruption with relatively mild explosions. Strombolian eruptive activity can last for a very long time, allowing the eruption system to repeatedly reset itself.
“The return of Strombolian eruptions as the current eruption characteristic of Mount Anak Krakatau is, for the time being, interpreted as the end of a rather long continuous eruption episode,” it said.
