Anak Dalam tribe needs attention

JAMBI, Jambi: An organization fighting for the rights of the
Anak Dalam tribe has called for the provincial legislature to do
more to help improve the welfare of the indigenous tribe, which
lives in the hinterland of the province.

"Councillors in the province and the region only seem to think
about their own interests, forgetting about this tribe, known
locally as Kubu," Budhi Vrihaspathi Jauhari, the organization's
executive director, said here on Thursday.

Budhi said only foreign organizations, and local non-
governmental organizations in cooperation with overseas
institutions, had done anything to help the Kubu tribe.

He, however, lamented that certain groups had taken advantage
of the tribe for personal gain.

He said that the tribe's settlement area in the Bukit Dua
Belas National Park was dwindling in size because of the rapid
expansion of oil palm plantations in the district.--Antara
