The government is accelerating the development of the national cattle sector by importing feeder cattle from abroad. Brazil is one of the primary sources being prepared to supply animals for the programme. Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman said that part of the feeder cattle to strengthen the national herd would come from Brazil. He stated that some cattle have already entered Indonesia. “There are some from Brazil. They are varied, but clearly Brazilian. There have already been arrivals from Brazil for cattle,” Amran told reporters at the Bulog warehouse in the DKI Jakarta and Banten regional offices, in Jakarta, on Wednesday (4 March 2026). He cited that the number of feeder cattle to be imported would range from 50,000 to 100,000 head. The population growth is intended to strengthen domestic beef production. “Planned to be 50 thousand to 100 thousand head,” he said. Meanwhile, the government is also starting to build cattle farming zones in several regions. Amran stated that the project has entered the initial construction phase after groundbreaking ceremonies at several sites. “Progress is under way, it’s groundbreaking. It is already at five locations,” he said when asked about the project’s progress. He argued that expanding production is a strategic step to strengthen the national cattle sector and reduce reliance on meat imports in the future. The development programme forms part of the integrated cattle farming project involving the Investment Management Agency for Power Anagata Nusantara (BPI Danantara). The investment value prepared for a single package of cattle farming development is estimated at around Rp2.4 trillion. The government’s scheme is not limited to cattle fattening; it also aims to build a complete ecosystem from upstream to downstream. Facilities to be built include cattle farming zones, a feed plant, and grazing land management as a feed source for livestock. This integrated model is expected to sustain production continuity, from feed availability and animal health to domestic beef and milk supplies. In addition to cattle, the government is also expanding poultry farming as part of strengthening national food security. The programme is also prepared to meet needs for the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) programme. In the initial phase, poultry farming will be developed in 12 locations. The next phase plans to target 18 additional sites across regions, including East Java, Lampung, and Kalimantan. The government is also preparing day-old chicks (DOC) to safeguard supplies for smallholders.
